About fertility

Adopting a child is a complex issue of choice. Many people do not understand the nature of adoption and there is still a lot of stigma around the subject. The word "choice" itself raises a lot of questions; who has a choice in this process? The child or children being adopted? The social workers helping them find a new home? The birth family who may not have any say in what happens to their offspring?

Seems like the only ones with any element of control are...the adoptive parents. Right? 

 

As an adoptive father, I found very little element of "control" in the process that we followed. I could not control the years of futile efforts to have children the so-called "natural" way. I could not control the tragic ending to my efforts, two miscarriages that broke my heart. I could not control the uneducated attitudes I came across on the way. And I certainly felt very little control over the adoption process which lasted a year to the day from my first meeting with our social worker to the day we brought our son home. But what I did have was an open mind, a heart full of love and a willingness to change my own attitudes before I could change the future for me and my family.
